If you were a fan of the KC 13A Red Wings this season, you knew you had to keep your Sundays open.
The Red Wings came out strong to open the playoffs, going 3-0 in the round robin, and earning home advantage for the final two games of the season. Meeting the Red Wings in the semifinal for the seventh time this season were the familiar West End Bruins. This time the Red Wings took the win, advancing on goals by #11 Troy Succo, #15 Nathaniel Maclaurin, #2 Garrett Lawson, and #6 Rylan Spanninga.
For the SIXTH time this season, the Red Wings were set for a Championship Sunday. This time they would face the Westfort Mavericks, who had defeated the North End Blazers to earn their shot at the Gold Division Championship. This was the sixth matchup of the season between these teams, with the Red Wings holding a 3-2 season advantage.
The Red Wings had already seen some KC success on Championship Sunday, with the KC Bertrand Contracting Knights raising the banner after winning the U11A Gold Championship.
Later it was their turn.
Surrounded by a Sea of Red, the Red Wings pulled ahead 1-0 on a goal by #2 Garrett Lawson, but saw the Mavericks even the score before the end of the 1st period. Next to strike was Red Wings #11 Troy Succo, putting his team ahead by a single goal. The Mavericks pushed back hard and evened the score again with 8:22 left in the 3rd. Less than two minutes later, Troy Succo put the Red Wings in front once again, with his 101st goal of the season!
The final seven minutes saw furious action and amazing goaltending, but as the clock ticked down to zero, the KC Red WIngs held on to the win the LMHL U13A Gold Championship.
Huge shout out to the Westfort Mavericks on a fantastic season, and a great effort in an exciting Championship final.
